Hell yeah brother, you're on the please before on YouTube channel. all right now. Oh yeah, hey Paul how you doing there? Welcome to Paul Bartelli HQ Is everything your own? Black everything. First things first, we're topping off the cup with some jet fuel.

Smart Having a jet fuel trailer here. Got it. Gotta have fuel. How much fuel does that hold? 1000 gallons? Just in case.

Here's all girl right here. Whoa! This is a different one though. This is the D model. This is the D model.

no pointy nose on this. Yeah wow. nose All right. So this is a D model.

We rode in a F model. This is a MD 500 D model and this has the smaller engine which is a Rolls-Royce C1 Correct Okay, the one we flew the other day 530 F model for Freedom. The 200 more horsepower Basically yeah, a little more to him. 650 is the horsepower.

an engine and a half. If you want to see which on the hood this this look which are the hood right? This is crazy. You said it was 1978. it's 1978.

this thing keeps it clean. This is under the hood. Oh yeah. oh wow.

yeah yeah. and uh noticeably just a smaller version. So sweet. The F model Burns A lot more fuel than the D model.

Vmile still has plenty of power. They don't make this model anymore. Okay, they only make an E where it has the pointy nose. similar to the F-bomb but it has the seats.

One has a C20p so the D model can get around sea level no problem. It's when you're in high altitude and heavy that you need the F Correct Correct high altitude heavier. you get a better performance with a bigger motor. Would this pick up a jet boat? This will pick up the Champions Okay, what do we got going on here? Wow, this is what the episode does.

This is what the F model does here when it's not doing training with you. Yeah, we do a long line. This is what we flew over here on this side. Oh it's got some benches on it.

Yeah, don't walk into the helicopter. Oh oh this is our roping machine and this is our tactical operations trainer. Yeah, so when I'm working with you this gear is off doing a long line. but then we put the gear back on and turn it into a tactical operation very similar to the military.

Little Bird Yeah so I told everybody to look up your Instagram last time which is Paul Bartheli but he also has Airborne tacticals if you want to see like crazy stuff. if you look up Airborne Tactical. What's the deal with this? Is this for the release? Yeah this is the hook. Yes with your train operating it at all.

Fast growth. You have to dump the ropes because you can't fly where these roads hanging. So the military operation or any operation law enforcement is you dump the woods. Oh the guys are off.

Now if you have a person in the back called a Hearthstone oh this person Yanks right here. Oh this is all nice Billet too. This is all built by Tyler Systems Tyler Tech and I'm a trainer and also a agent for Tyler and they built Us in California. They just ride on this thing right here.
This is a big this is attachment. Absolutely Maybe. Yeah, how casual you eat your lunch out here. If you're in Rain You get pelted, You get pelted pretty good.

Do you lose a lot of speed if you have these on? Yes, the aircraft is all this as you know it's called parasite drag. This is all equipment on the outside of the aircraft and it's all dragged. We it can fly at about a hundred dollars versus 135 points. That's not really a problem, but it is the drag.

This helicopter was in Spiderman up in New York and then and the D model was in Superman I'm a big fan of this one. the F model I like the body of it but the big engine can only fly it for two hours right? Because it burns so much fuel. So with the fuel that you carry in this helicopter, you can only fly for two hours with an AUX tank. Yeah, you can fly for two and a half to almost three hours and a D or an E with an option.

Yeah, so I Want to get a pointy nose? Unit E model with the C20 That'd be perfect for us all right now. today we're gonna go look at it. No talk. Oh yeah yeah! MD has this other type of helicopter called a Notar so it's called the 520 N.

We have the 500d, the 530f, 500c and now the 520 N for no tar and it has no tail rotor. It has a Thrust fan that just blows air out of the tail. but I guess we're gonna go look at it. There's no point in me explaining, we'll go see it.

Oh what the hell is this? So this? What the heck is that? It's a Huey fuselage and it's our simulator. We use this to rope off of and do hoist training and do fast roping and Hurst work. So it raises 25 feet in the air and it has, uh, matter of fact I'll open the door and show you. let me do that.

So we put this out and we rope off of this side camper all the way up because you don't have to jump out of a running helicopter for your first try your first try. We also have a hoist a Personnel hoist. You can actually hoist up and down. Next time you're in the area you got to bring this by the shop.

You got it. Bro jack stand out the side of it. You can pull it right up the front of the shot. There you go.

That's freaking sweet. All right So now we've checked out Paul's shower, we're actually gonna go look at the no tar helicopter which is gonna be cool and we're gonna take the D model which is super cool so we get to try that out and then we're gonna fly the end model so. but we're also going to do some Maneuvers in this D model real quick before we take off. So I'm going to show you some of the things that you may not know it can do.

Okay I'm here for it brother. getting the unit hold out you know I really like Paul We should give him something nice. we should get them like a give them something cool. You know? yeah, something cool for his neighborhood.

Yeah, maybe someone's put in his yard. Look at this guy. dude. he's Majestic he's pulling his helicopter around in the driveway.
I mean talk about goals dude. there's a couple MD helicopters. Oh come on out. All right.

So the first you want to do is I'm gonna take you down here. Okay, all right, follow me through here. We go here we go. I Got that? I got the patterns too.

Just stay with me. Oh my. God Holy crap. Foreign.

They just don't look on purpose. Probably feels about a thousand times faster inside the helicopter too. George How's your first MD experience? Yeah, it's a ripper smooth. Yeah, he's fully articulated.

Is that what? I Think he's part of it. Five Blades makes it nice. Oh, is that is that a big part of it? Yeah. I mean five blades makes it smooth.

Fully articulating rotor head makes it smooth. It's flying. It was a good helicopter. Yeah, basically like a Cadillac of the sky.

but it's like it's Corvette yeah. George You see this? they got, uh, crops crop spraying helicopters out here. Yeah, talking about that. That's oh I didn't I didn't know we could put Mountain Dew in that and spray the whole crowd at the freedom Factory Everyone's all sticky.

All right. So this is the no tar. Real tricky tail situation we're gonna have Paul Explain it. Paul Tell us about it.

Come on over here. This is called the no tar, right? no tail rotor. There's no tail rotor and it does a nozzle and it blows the air out the side and just looks like it's huge. Directional control.

Look inside this thing. look at that big old hole in there. That's where the air comes out hell. And unlike most helicopters, you can walk right up to the back of this helicopter and not get hurt.

Oh yeah. well. yeah, that's a big thing with helicopters is people get hurt by the tail rotors. One but two isn't it? 70 of the noise from a helicopter.

it comes from the tail rotor. So these helicopters are supposedly very quiet. I've never seen or heard one. We'll get out Of here today.

Yes, this gives you directional control as well, which is unlike the D and the E and the F because this helps stabilize even the exhaust is pointing to the left. Correct the Java tail rotors to keep a helicopter from spinning right opposite of the rotor system. like if your ceiling fan could, it would twist your ceiling in your in your house so it has to have some sort of anti-torque right. normally tail rotor.

but they use thrust. There's a big fan up there. see the huge Inlet of there. Oh yeah, you can.

That's where the air goes in the cage and just like a drive shaft. Powers The tail rotor on a helicopter. a drive shaft power is a huge fan on these that just blows us. Yeah, it's just it's not like a turbine or something.

I mean I think it's a fancy fan I Don't think it's just some standard. it's one of those Home Depot fans. Yeah, box fan. Yeah, it sounds on box fan but it's it's a gnarly fan.
so you got a couple things then you got quieter. safer for passengers getting out, but you don't have as much tail rotor. Authority is what it's called. You know that ability to really pick up a jet boat? and you know, have enough tail to keep that thing straight.

I Don't know, You know. You hear a lot of mixed reviews about the notar and stuff. So Paul's like when we go fly one all right? Paul Let's do it. I Guess it's just a little bit squishier.

This thing essentially moves right. So if you want to move the I'm gonna push the tip pedals and watch it. Yeah, push spells. So if you want to move the nose to the right, this thing.

oh, it just closes the nozzle so it's not actually moving the nozzle. It just cuts off the flow. Yeah, okay, so if there's not thrust coming out here, then the body will automatically rotate right. and then if you open up the full thrust, it makes the road to your left.

I didn't realize it I thought it was so heavy air the other direction so it's just cutting off its feed. Exactly. It's always pointing its direction and then it closes it and opens it for more thrust more. Authority And and right here is where the air comes in.

This is the up on top. The air is a screen here. up inside, there is a big fan right here in the back of the tail boom. Yeah and it blows the air down the boom and out that nozzle.

This is a really nice helicopter too. It's beautiful. It's got air conditioning in this unit. Yeah oh man, he's he said he need the corporate setup.

Thanks for letting us check this thing out today. Man, this is not a work helicopter. this is a luxury. Oh yeah, nice.

Sun hits her fresh paint. Oh yeah, the condenser back there for the AC Got air conditioning on this one. This one nice. Oh yeah, there's the lines right there.

These are a wire strike kits so if you run into a wire which you don't want to do, it'll guide the wire up into it and try to cut it. You know? yeah, that might be how thick those wires are out there. You might be all right with a telephone or cable if we had that thing to spray the glue at the drag strip. Oh yeah, brother, you ready for this? Yeah! I'm excited to see what this is like.

Let me know if it's quieter. I'm looking forward to it firing it up, firing up the No Charge baby looks like a dragonfly. honestly sounds more like a plane. Yeah, it's definitely quieter.

Oh my gosh, this thing is so smooth. Holy cow, you can't feel a damn. Shake You're right here. It's very quiet right here.

Oh yeah, it's it's definitely quieter. You ready for this? I Got it? Oh, it's yours. All right? I got it. Nice shooting approach to the bad.

Yeah, so the pedals feel pretty much the same up here and right as of right now. I Can't really tell the difference between no tar and interesting. Okay, that felt a little different I Felt it kind of felt it kind of grabbed me there. you know, using a hat.
Any yeah, a little bit. Okay, that's interesting. feels the same for her now. right? right? Let me get down low and do a couple pedal terms, but you mind if I jam it in there.

Pretty good. let's see what seems pretty responsive. Oh yeah, Oh yeah, it blows you around. All right.

I'll do another up for now. All right Dude, this is sweet. Yeah, it's beautiful. I mean the smoothness you gained should I do some cyber flight Dude? I'm with you here.

We go. All right here. we go. Speed? Yeah.

I'm trying to run out of pedal here in a minute. Yeah, close. Okay, it is smooth isn't it? I mean it's crazy. driveshaft a tail with her back there eliminates all this.

this. just High freaking airframe. Yeah, this goes away and it goes into Collective too. Oh, this thing is smooth.

Oh yeah. very smooth. Very smooth. Would you say that the it's more or less reliable than a tail rotor? Um, it's just as reliable.

Yeah, yeah. I mean it could be more reliable if you hit something with a tail motor. Yeah, the object comes up. It won't happen that way.

Would you say that the fan puts out roughly the same amount of torque as the tail rotor waiting? Um, well. it's it's counteracting with the thrust, right? But it's it Put, it has to put out, but it's able to put out to keep this thing straight. Yeah in All Phases of flight. Yes, there's some certain phases of flight where the Taylor is a little bit more effective than this.

You know? Yeah, and that's why I use what I use because I can't fly it backwards like that. You can't do those roving things foreign. It's really quiet, isn't it like those food? So smooth. Migration helicopter I Tell you what it performs, but when you really want to go all the way left, it's not as much tailroad right? it just has.

It's a little different. Authority Yes, you have to go with the video sequencies correct, but it is the technology and the MD product is still. you can't beat it. Great job of day and you know again you flew this machine like you like you've flown it before.

Hey man! I Appreciate all the help. All right Well everybody Give It Up Appreciate it. Y'all all right guys, we're gonna head back into town. We're gonna get the carving cup head back to Bradenton We got some cars to work on.

That's it for now. Thanks for watching. Do it for now. We'll freaking see you later.

Foreign.

Hi Cleetus, thanks for the terrific video!! Looks like a total blast!!

I remember watching Magnum PI as a kid. Magnums pilot buddy TC flew an MD5xx. I've loved it ever since.

Kinda ironic, but, my first real job was building visual DBs for simulators. The company mainly built computer visual systems (a bit before GPU graphics 😂).

On my first day I was introduced to my "review station" which was a 3 x 3 array of monitors with an office chair bolted to the floor in front. There was a real cyclic, collective, and footpedals arranged around the chair.

I basically had to learn to fly rotary wing to review my work. I crashed allot but after a few days of persistence I finally figured it out. Like riding a bike… you never forget.

The main flight SW I used was for the MH6 Littlebird. So incredibly gratifying and fun! I'm eventually gonna learn how to really fly. As soon as I'm able to afford my own, the MD530F (or similar) will be my first choice.

Hmmm .. As I recall, the NOTAR did not just use the aft thrust port for counter-rotation there was also a downward pointing slot on the starboard length of the tail boom that provided even more starboard thrust using the coanda effect to co-opt a portion of the down draft from the main rotors. Of course I'm remembering my looking at how it worked from 40 years ago so, I could be wrong. I always thought it was a safer system and it and the special rotor blades that the military used to bring the noise down further should be standard issue requirements for police birds to make them a bit stealthier and much less annoying when orbiting.

  6. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Brian Humble says:

For those of you who love physics, The NOTAR system is more than just a fan blowing out air. It uses something called the Coanda effect as well as direct thrust. These are cool effects to look up such as the Coanda effect and Magnus effect that make a spinning ball curve or air flowing over a curved surface. NOT Bernoulis BTW. Cool stuff. Side question: I suppose the NOTAR system does not have the same zones of LTE (loss of tail rotor effectiveness) due to lack of vortices etc.

  7. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Adam Has 2 Hands says:

I wonder what kind of maintenance goes into that no rotor tail. It looks like it rotates on a series of bearings so I'd imagine you have to keep it oiled up.
